The Importance of Living in Alignment with Your Core Values: Finding your true self and living a meaningful life through hypnotherapy

If we don’t know what we want, how can we get what we want?

Or: if we don’t know where we are going, how do we know how to get there?

This is a key question behind many manifestation techniques, but what if we were to take a non-woo-woo look at this concept?

Core values come into play when you start to ask yourself these important questions.

What often comes up when I am working with clients is that they don’t know what their core values are … so how do they know where they want to go? Good question!

Let’s start by looking at what core values are.

Core values are the beliefs that you live by or want to live by. They are the beliefs about yourself and life that are the most important to you. These beliefs come to us from many different places. They can come from our upbringing, teachers, books, stories, society, family, friends, and can also be inherent to who we are at a deep fundamental level.

Here are some examples of core values (a very short list from a long list of beliefs that may drive us forward):

Adventure

Altruism

Career

Community

Connection

Fairness

Family

Fun

Openness

Recognition

Success

Spirituality

Truth

Understanding

Wealth

When we live stressed out, burnt out, busy lives we lose touch with our inner wisdom and with this comes a disconnection to our core values. This is why I think a lot of folks struggle when I ask them to tell me their top 5 values. A lot of the work I do through hypnotherapy and coaching can help us align ourselves with this inner wisdom so that we can get back in touch with who we are, what we truly believe in, and how we want to live.

""Living into our values means that we do more than profess our values, we practice them. We walk our talk... we are clear about what we believe and hold important, and we take care that our intentions, words, thoughts, and behaviors align with those beliefs."

~ Brené Brown, author of Dare to Lead

Self-awareness about your core values can help you move forward in a meaningful mindful way towards a life you love instead of an unfulfilling life aligned with someone else’s values, someone’s else path. As someone who has been there, done that, I know all too well how important it is to walk our own path based on what matters most to us. This is why I have a passion for helping others understand their own values so that they create their own path.

When we are lost and unclear about our purpose in life, reconnecting with our core values can reorient us to the life we want to lead.

Losing sight of our values can lead us to question why we are here and why we are struggling to find meaning.

Living life aligned with someone else’s values or society’s values can lead us astray. Yet when we are exhausted all the time, it is way too easy to just plod along someone else’s path or even just an accidental path. We might even experience “existential dread” as our worry and feelings of disorientation and aimlessness set in. So, what can we do?

"Live while you are alive."

~ Ben Okri, poet and novelist

This quote is a simple, yet impactful one. In my opinion, a lot of western living doesn’t allow us to live in a deeper, more meaningful way that aligns with our values. It can often take a cataclysmic event or health crisis to shake us awake. There comes a moment when we are in pain (mental, emotional, physical or spiritual) and we don’t know why. What we do know is that have we seek answers to create a life of joy and inner peace for ourselves.
