Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about hypnosis, hypnotherapy and working with me.
Hypnotherapists use hypnosis - that is, they induce a hypnotic state - to help clients increase their motivation and/or alter patterns of behavior. Work begins with a consultation to determine the nature of the problem, explain how hypnosis works, and review what the client will experience throughout the course of their program. As sessions progress, hypnotherapists will not only use hypnosis, but train clients in self-hypnosis to maximize the impact of their program.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that facilitates communication between the conscious and the subconscious; it aims to help you reprogram your subconscious with positive thoughts and images. Achieving the hypnotic state is a skill and, therefore, requires practice.
Integral Hypnotherapy® is an evidence-based approach to hypnotherapy that has been scientifically validated by National Institutes of Health-funded research. Integral Hypnotherapy® is a varying multi-session system that combines classical hypnotherapy with modern methods and protocols. It also integrates perennial wisdom traditions and human potential training, which includes life skills coaching and applied mind sciences. Integral Hypnotherapy® is an educational and self-improvement process that facilitates access to a person’s internal resources to assist people in solving problems, increasing motivation, or altering behavior patterns to create positive change.
Hypnotherapy is a way to access and communicate with your subconscious mind, whereas traditional talk therapy works with your conscious mind. Hypnotherapy can be an adjunct to traditional talk therapy, and it works very well as a complimentary service when you have a goal you want to reach and habits you want to change or develop in response to your talk therapy work.
Not at all. You remain mentally aware while in a hypnotic state and able to take yourself out of hypnosis at any time. And it cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do. Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind and uses the programming of positive ideas that you have co-created with your hypnotherapist, there is no danger. In fact, hypnosis will help you gain control of your mind and can assist you in moving forward with your self-selected goals and ideas. Hypnotherapy is an empowerment tool that you can use to create lasting positive changes in your life without focusing on the past. To further make the process safe and comfortable, I provide private hypnotherapy sessions via Zoom to help maintain a supportive and protected environment. You get to make yourself comfortable at home while being coached and guided into hypnosis.
No, you won’t do anything you don’t want to do while in hypnosis. Remember: you can bring yourself out of hypnosis at any time and you always are free to comment and ask questions, even while in a hypnotic state.

Pre-recorded hypnosis only addresses generic issues and causes to common problems and will only work if you relate to the suggestions in the recordings. Working with a hypnotherapist, like me, means you get customized recordings of your live sessions. These recordings include your personalized hypnosis so that you can continue to work towards your goal in-between sessions. I will also set you up with the skills to practice self-hypnosis without a recording. In addition to experiencing personalized hypnosis, when you work with me you will benefit from coaching to help you dive deeper into what is holding you back from reaching your goals as well as benefit from the accountability that comes from personal one-on-one work.
Yes! Anyone who WANTS to be hypnotized can be hypnotized. The key here is that you have to want to have the experience, be open to the positive programming of your subconscious mind and be willing and committed to doing self-hypnosis daily. (After the first session, I will provide you with a short recording and a worksheet on how to guide yourself into hypnosis when and wherever you choose. Remember that you are in control of your own success.)
The answer to this question varies depending on you, your lifestyle, issues being dealt with, goals, dedication to your own well-being, and your desire to change your life.
Typically, I suggest a minimum of 3 sessions to help you get the best foundation to help you move forward with your self-hypnosis practice. Integral Hypnotherapy® is designed to be experienced over a series of personalized sessions. Clients typically experience the most progress through 6 to 8 weekly sessions, however, some goals, such as accelerated learning and test taking, are better suited to 3 to 4 sessions. It is best to book your sessions once a week, at most two weeks apart. Long breaks, especially early in our time together, causes disruption. Unless you can commit to your own change and maintain your daily self-hypnosis practice consistently, long breaks can prove distracting to your success.
This is a complimentary 30-minute phone call to help you and me decide if we are a fit for each other. This call gives you a chance to ask questions and get more information about hypnotherapy and learn how it can help you reach your goals. It also gives each of us a chance to get to know each other a little bit, because a key ingredient in the hypnotherapist & co-therapist (you) relationship is trust. I will ask you questions about your goal(s) and may offer a suggested number of sessions based on your schedule and what you want to achieve. If you and I are ready to move forward at the end of this call, I will follow up with a participation agreement for you to fill out and return. Once that is in place and any medical releases are provided, if required, we will schedule your first session and I will send you an invoice for the package you decided on.
In this 2-hour session, I will ask you follow-up questions on your goal and go deeper on the challenges you are facing around reaching your goal and what your desired outcome is. Then I will educate you about how the mind works, how hypnotherapy works, how the conscious and subconscious relate to each other, and then work with you to develop personalized affirmations and imagery. Once we have collaborated and agreed on your therapeutic suggestions, I will guide you into hypnosis. The session will end with an explanation of how to take yourself into hypnosis so you can program your own mind and start moving towards your goal.
Ongoing follow-up sessions are typically 90 to 120 minutes. I will check in with you about your goal and homework at the beginning of each session. In this opening process, I may offer coaching and/or teachable insights to help you explore your goal and limiting beliefs consciously that may assist you in reaching your goal. These sessions will help reinforce previous work together to allow you to make the lasting changes you desire. I will also explain the techniques I will use before guiding you into hypnosis and will work with you to create additional customized suggestions to help you reach your goal.
Next, I will guide you into hypnosis. You will have many opportunities to ask questions at each session. Remember, you are in charge of your own mind and therefore your own success. This is a collaborative process – it is your mind being programmed so speak up! (This applies to working with any hypnotherapist, whether we decide to work together or not) As you practice hypnosis you will gain more control over your mind and in turn be more in control of reaching your goals and making the positive changes you desire in your life.
At the end of each session, we discuss homework, which typically includes listening to your recordings at least once a day. Since hypnosis is a skill, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you commit to doing your self-hypnosis practice every day.
Around the third or fourth session, if you have been doing your homework successfully, we may use more guided imagery to tap into your inner creative mind for hypnotherapy that will feel even more empowering and insightful!
We meet on Zoom. You will receive your custom link before your first session that will be good for all follow up sessions. It is important that you have a steady and strong internet connection, a reliable computer (not your cell phone) and webcam and are able to set yourself up in a safe and quiet location that is free from distractions like family, friends, children, fur babies, bells and whistles. I will send you a guide before your first session that will explain how to set yourself up for hypnosis and what to have handy.
To get the most out of your experience, please refrain from taking intoxicants, such as alcohol and marijuana, before, during and after your sessions. These substances reduce your mind’s ability to benefit from the positive experience we are trying to build in sessions.
Also, it is vital that you keep up with your homework. Following the recommended daily practice is an important part of the work to achieve your goal with hypnotherapy.
Yes, your first session includes a short 5 – 8-minute self-hypnosis recording and 2 to 3 of your follow-up sessions will include personalized recordings (based on the techniques used) to assist you in reaching your goal. Not every session includes a recording.
Currently, I only work with adults who are 25 years old and above.
Unfortunately, not everyone is a fit for hypnotherapy.
If a person is experiencing suicidal thoughts, substance addiction or psychosis, hypnotherapy is not the best option. If this is you or someone you know, please get the medical help needed. Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatments.
Sometimes, someone in our life, like a parent, partner, or friend, has told us we must change, or we must do something specific. Hypnotherapy clients must want to change themselves and have to want to experience hypnosis for themselves in order to benefit from hypnotherapy.
If you aren’t prepared to allow yourself to experience hypnosis and relax, it won’t work. You have to want to experience hypnosis. Remember that you are in control of your own mind; your hypnotherapist is a guide and a supportive coach training you to relax and remain mentally clear. You will program your own mind. This isn’t magic or supernatural, it is a natural state of mind. Hypnosis isn’t a magic pill that you take once and it “takes effect” in 20 minutes. You have to do the work and follow through by doing your homework. If you’re not prepared to do this, then hypnotherapy may not be right for you at this time.
If you can’t describe the change they want or goal they would like to achieve then hypnotherapy may not be for you. Hypnotherapy is for people who can explain what they want to experience, what they want to change in their own life. This requires a willingness to trust and be open with your hypnotherapist – remember they can only help you if you tell them what positive changes you want for yourself.
